On 2 December 2013, Zhang Dejiang, Chairman of the National People's Congress (NPC) Standing Committee, met at the Great Hall of the People with UK Prime Minister David Cameron.

Zhang Dejiang said that following the trend of the times, seizing the opportunities of cooperation and uplifting China-UK relations conform to the fundamental interests of the two countries and of the two peoples. China-UK relations have gradually returned to the right track after experiencing the twists and turns. It provides new space for all-dimensional cooperation between the two countries. Over the years, the NPC of China and the UK Parliament have always maintained friendly exchanges and have established the parliamentary regular exchange mechanism. Hope both sides will work together to make more efforts in terms of the breadth and depth of exchanges, to strengthen exchanges and mutual learning in legislation, state governance and other fields, to deepen mutual understanding, to respect each other's concerns, to enhance political mutual trust and to promote practical cooperation so as to foster a sound foundation of support from the public opinion for stable development of China-UK relations and to provide a fair legal environment.
